"There are a blessed few who can carry a whole television show on their talent and charisma - but I can't think of one other who's done it quite so politely. I once showed my son Joshua an old episode of Doctor Who, in which Lis appeared. "But that's Sarah Jane," he said, confused "In old Doctor Who. From years ago. How come she always look exactly the same?" It's not a comfort today, of course, but children will still be saying that 50 years from now."

Doctor Who Takes Manhattan
The Doctor Who cast and crew — and, seemingly, half of New York City — turned out last night for the U.S. premiere screening of the BBC America series' sixth season opener. Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Alex Kingston, Steven Moffat, and executive producers Piers Wenger and Beth Willis were met with gleeful cheers from a massive crowd when they arrived at Village East Cinemas around 6:30 pm. Steven Moffat on the new series!
Steven Moffat is Doctor Who's lead writer and Executive Producer. He recently took time out to answer questions about the new series, spilling some secrets about mystery, monsters and a momentous cliff-hanger...
How has this series evolved from last year?
Steven Moffat: Well we've moved through the funfair a bit - we've done the rollercoaster, now we're on the ghost train. Last year, in a way, was all about saying, don't worry, it's still him, it's still the same show, nothing's really been lost. Losing a leading man like David Tennant is seismic - unless you gain a leading man like Matt Smith. It's been the biggest joy to see him stride in and just claim that TARDIS for his own. But now he's really here, and the part is his, and the bow tie is cool, he's ready to lead us places we didn't know existed. Last year we reassured you - this year, to hell with that, we're going to worry the hell out of you. How well do we really know that man, or what he's capable of? We're putting the Who? back in the Doctor.
Is there a major story arc to look out for?
Oh, there's a big story being told this year, and major mysteries from the very off. As ever, in this show, the stories all stand alone, and every episode is a perfect jumping-on point for a new viewer. But at the same time the over-arching plot will be a bigger player this year. More than hints and whispers - we're barely ten minutes into episode one before our heroes face a dilemma that they'll be staring at months from now. And there will be no easy answers.
Will there be new monsters?
They're ... scary. Very scary. And, ohh, I don't want to say more - there's the Silence in 1 & 2, the Siren, in episode 3, the Gangers in 5 & 6, all these are more than just freaky costumes and masks; there are SCARY ideas here. And just wait till you meet Idris in episode 4.
Is this series scarier than the last one?
See above. Yes, I think so. But it's not JUST scary - it's funny and moving and revelling in its own insanity too.
How have the characters evolved?
The big difference, I suppose, is how long the Doctor is hanging around in the lives of his Companions. His normal MO is get them while they're young, and leave them while they're young too. He's careful to put them back where he found them, before he screws up their lives. But here he is, married couple on board - and much as he loves them both, he does wonder if it isn't time he got out of the way. Before something really BAD happens.
What can you tell us about the cliff-hanger at the end of episode 7?
Normally our cliff-hangers are lives being threatened. With this one, three live are changed FOREVER.

Amy Pond meets Amy Pond. Steven Moffat reveals what part Doctor Who is going to be playing on Red Nose Night
A new mini-adventure of Doctor Who is going to be playing an important role on Red Nose Day on 18 March, and showrunner Steven Moffat has given SFX the inside skinny on what’ll be happening:
“Two episodes. Two mini-episodes. Very, very small episodes – maybe eight minutes in total, so that’s around four minutes each. It’s not a spoof. It’s in the style of the ones that we’ve done for Children In Need, so it’s taken seriously as a proper bit of Doctor Who – funny, but not a sketch. A little miniature story. One’s called ‘Space’ and one’s called ‘Time’, so they’re Space & Time. And there’s a moment with two Amy Ponds in it. If you’re a red-blooded male surely that’s enough! You’ve got Amy Pond flirting with herself.”
This is just your personal fantasy, isn’t it?
“It’s everybody’s personal fantasy! I’m really, really pleased with them. I think they’re really good, really very funny. It’s Matt, Karen and Arthur, and there isn’t a guest character. It’s just the three of them. A moment of life aboard the TARDIS. But obviously life about the TARDIS instantly gets you into terrible jeopardy, and all of causality is threatened. As I’m sure it is every day when they get up and have their coffee…”

Doctor Who writer keeps his cool
Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat has revealed he had to play festive hits and chill his room to get the mood right to compose the Christmas special.Moffat, who is also in charge of the series as its executive producer, was stranded in a sweltering Los Angeles hotel room as he conjured up the tale.
The scriptwriter said he had a mental block until he took measures to change the atmosphere by turning up the air conditioning.
Moffat was stuck in LA during the air travel chaos earlier this year due to the Icelandic volcano which grounded flights. But tight deadlines meant the script had to be put together while he was there.
Writing in the Christmas edition of Radio Times about the experience, he said: "Two days of writing nothing, and I took emergency measures.
"I downloaded every Christmas song I could find, closed all the curtains, and turned up the air conditioning to 'Doctor Zhivago', and sat at my desk in a big coat and mittens. And I thought of the rules of Christmas movies."
The two-week Christmas edition of Radio Times is on sale until December 27, and the Doctor Who special is screened on Christmas Day.

Doctor Who – A Christmas Carol: introduction
The thrilling adventures of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and newlyweds Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) will continue in a Doctor Who fun-filled and heartfelt festive story, A Christmas Carol, this Christmas on BBC One.In the grand tradition of Doctor Who Christmas specials, this year the show has once again attracted stellar guest stars, as veteran actor Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Singing Detective) and Opera diva Katherine Jenkins, in her first acting role, join the Time Lord for what might be his most Christmassy adventure yet!
On winning her part, Katherine Jenkins said: "I'm over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas Special – I can't quite believe it as it's a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever!"
About the series, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, commented: "Oh, we're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. And... oh, you'll see.
"I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April. My neighbours loved it so much they all moved away and set up a website demanding my execution. But I'm fairly sure they did it ironically."
The Christmas special follows on from Matt Smith's first series as The Doctor, which attracted huge critical acclaim for Smith, his companion Gillan and lead writer Moffat, from press and legions of fans alike.

Steven Moffat: lanto wont come back
DOCTOR Who boss Steven Moffat says he won't bring back Torchwood character Ianto Jones despite desperate pleas from fans.
Executive producer Steven told fans on Twitter to stop asking for the character, played by Gareth David-Lloyd, 29, to be resurrected on his show.

The BBC has received hundreds of complaints from viewers who are desperate to see the character return even though he was killed off in Torchwood's third series, The Children of Earth.
Steven also added that former Doctor Who boss, Russell T Davies, was still responsible for spin-off shows Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, not him.
Writing on Twitter Steven said: "Ianto fans only: Russell's character, and I thought his death scene was brilliant. Not reversing it. Stop asking [sic]."
He added: "Torchwood is Russell's — nothing to do with me."

Matt Smith 'wants River Song reveal'
Doctor Who star Matt Smith has admitted that he is keen to discover the true identity of River Song (Alex Kingston).
The actor told The Salt Lake Tribune that Kingston was already aware of her character's ultimate fate.
"I hope The Doctor does actually discover who this lady is," he said. "[Showrunner] Steven [Moffat] has told Alex everything about the whole next season's plotline... and he's told me nothing because narratively, I'm meant to know less than her."

DWM lists more casting for Episodes One and Two
This months issue of Doctor Who Magazine lists a number of new cast members for the Moffat penned two-parter.The actors listed are:
Ricky Fearon, Chuk Iwuji, Mark Griffin, Glenn Wrage, Jeff Mash, Paul Critoph and Adam Napier.
Moffat Wants Captain Jack Back!?
Russell T. Davies has revealed that new Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat wants to feature Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) in the show at some point in the future. Davies made the comments in an interview with IGN where he also discussed how he and Moffat exchange storyline details on future plots on Doctor Who and its spin-off shows The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood so nothing clashes between the three shows.Speaking to IGN, Russell T. Davies had the following to say:
"Well, Steven said he'd love to see Jack in Doctor Who. So if Steven says that, Steven will make it happen, I would think. That's not inside information, but I bet one day it will happen. I'd love to see it. It would be marvellous."

Doctor Who Reinventor Steven Moffat on the Doctor’s Sex Life
One of your big changes in Doctor Who was introducing some sexual tension, with his new companion, Amy Pond. What was your thinking behind that?
I just thought it would be, you know, Bad Girl in the Tardis. They’ve always been so well behaved, those girls! I just thought, I haven’t met any girls like that. Most of the girls I know would just jump the Doctor as soon as they look at him. I said, It’s time we have one of those.
And one thing that got the fans riled up in Series 5 was that Amy did, in fact, start making out with the Doctor, putting him in this position where he had to say no. That’s never happened before, has it?
On Doctor Who, no. But I think if a man and a woman go through a life-or-death experience and they’re both young and attractive, that’s really quite plausible. In fact, you’d really have to ask why it hasn’t happened before in Doctor Who. I just thought it would be funny. ‘Cause the Doctor is used to deflecting people who are madly in love with him, but he’s never had to deflect someone who has a much shorter and more passionate agenda.
Do you think the Doctor is capable of having a sexual relationship?
We know that he had a family once. And we could pretend that he doesn’t have an eye for the pretty girl, but you’d be struggling to justify that view, wouldn’t you, looking at his choice of travel companions. I think he has at some point in his life indulged. Whether he still does is a secret between him and that big blue box.
You seem to be reluctant to kill your recurring characters on Doctor Who, even when they leave the show.
In the old series, they did off a couple of them. I’m not saying we’ll never do it, but it’s not that kind of a show. It’s not gritty. It’s kind of a lovely, life-affirming, optimistic show without a cynical bone in its body. It’s almost odd when you see it in competition with things like Battlestar Galactica, and you think, Well that’s not us at all. We’re the story of a wonderful man from space who can travel in a telephone box! But I’m not guaranteeing I won’t kill someone in the future!
[MILD SPOILER ALERT] In Series 5 you deliberately insert a continuity error into one of the earlier episodes in order to come back to that scene in the finale. How do you go about planting a moment like that?
Optimistically. It’s very, very hard, but I knew we needed one big event where we’d pull a switcheroo on the audience and have a scene which they thought made sense in context, and would understand it better later on. I spent a lot of time setting that up. Of course, a lot of fans picked up on [the intentional continuity error] and wondered if it really was a continuity error, which of course it wasn’t. Sadly, they then went around finding all the other continuity errors and elaborating huge theories about them — but that was the only one that was on purpose. The rest were just mistakes! So we’ve now got our whole eagle-eyed bloody audience looking out for our next ruddy mistake, which I wish they wouldn’t, ‘cause we’ll make quite a few, I’m sure.
Can you tell me a bit about the role River Song will play in Series 6? I was surprised to learn that she’s kind of a polarizing character.
Polarizing in what way? All our feedback is tremendously positive.

What can you tell us about River Song?
Well, you will find out who she is and what’s going on and how it all makes sense. And that will explain a number of things. I’m writing the episode right now where the Doctor finds out who she is. We’re not just going to endlessly tease.
